BECOME A HELPER

What does it mean to be a Helper?
APPLY!

The first step in becoming a Helper is applying! Let us know why you want to take part in SHS. Tell us about you and why you think you would be a good fit!

BE A PART OF SHS

Being an active member of SHS is a commitment. While it does not necessarily mean devoting a certain number of hours per week, it means being available when someone may need you. Seeing as this is only our second round of training Helpers, we can't predict how often our services will be used. We ask that all new Helpers prepare to devote at least 2 semesters to our program. SHS is not meant to be a big time commitment, instead it is meant to train students how to help their peers and provide a way to connect a struggling student with a friend who can help.

Be A Friend. A Peer. An Open Ear.
TRAINING

Our Helpers go through training in order to be best equipped to help others with whatever they might need. This training is primarily mental health based, but also incorporates basic interpersonal skills and education on available resources at Penn State. Training is MANDATORY and Helpers must attend ALL of the sessions before they can begin as an active SHS member. Training will be offerred at the beginning of each semester; if you are unable to attend the training, you will need to wait until the next semester to join SHS.
